Slayton: Better Brew for a Better World
Amelia
dedicated seven years directly to the planet saving cause
when she worked for Greenpeace.
Her work involved fundraising, banner-making and eventually
managing the Santa Cruz office. She claims that despite
"participating in countless demos and actions, I
somehow managed to never get arrested!"
Slayton
also assisted in organizing Ruckus
Society activist training camps. Coincidentally this
author also participated in one of those camps. And I
can attest that it is a serious beer drinking bunch! A
kind brewery donated somewhere in the neighborhood of
100 cases of beer for the one week training camp and we
polished it off with no problem. Activism is thirsty work!

Eventually
Amelia decided to pursue her own brewing enthusiasm by forming
the Seven
Bridges Cooperative. Seven Bridges was initially founded in
1996 with the intention of producing mead and beer, but the cooperative
members decided to start out by retailing certified
organic homebrew ingredients and supplies. Today the company
is firmly established as the world's leading all-organic homebrew
supplier.
A few years
ago Slayton added organic and fair
trade certified home coffee roasting supplies to the company's
array of products. As Amelia continues to grow the business, she
has also obtained a brewing system and plans for an all organic
brewery are beginning to emerge. Perhaps we'll be drinking Seven
Bridges' red ale in a brewpub soon?
